Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
